ADHD – What We Offer

Therapy Support for Children and Teens Managing ADHD

What is ADHD

What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) affects how a child focuses, behaves and manages energy. While understanding the condition matters, it’s important to have the right support once you have some clarity.

As a team of psychologists specialising in ADHD on the Lower North Shore of Sydney, we focus on helping your child build practical, lasting skills through therapy tailored to their needs.

ADHD In Family Life

ADHD does not just affect the child, it affects the whole family. Daily routines like mornings, homework and bedtime can become a source of stress, and parents often find themselves managing big emotions and constant reminders. Siblings can feel overlooked and everyone can end up feeling exhausted or misunderstood.

At Aspiring Minds Child Psychology, we work with children aged six and older - alongside their parents, carers, and schools - to make sense of ADHD and build practical strategies for real life. Our approach is evidence based, individualised, and focused on helping every child feel understood, not just managed.

ADHD Symptoms in Children and Teens

ADHD can look different depending on age and personality, but the key sign is a consistent pattern that affects daily life at home, school, and in relationships. Understanding what to look for is a helpful starting point.

How ADHD Presents

ADHD generally shows up in one of three ways:

  • Predominantly Inattentive Presentation – difficulties with attention, organisation and following instructions; often less noticeable as it is typically less disruptive.

  • Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation – restlessness, impulsive decisions, difficulty waiting or sitting still

  • Combined Presentation – a combination of both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms.

Many childhood behaviours that look like ADHD are a normal part of growing up. Every young child is impulsive sometimes, and every teenager loses focus occasionally. The difference with ADHD is that these patterns are significant, persistent, and pervasive across various settings such as home and school, and can affect daily life, including friendships, learning, family routines or self-esteem.

Signs in Children (6+)

  • Trouble sitting still or waiting their turn

  • Difficulty following instructions or finishing tasks

  • Frequent forgetfulness or losing belongings

  • Big emotional reactions or trouble calming down

  • Constant movement or talking, even in calm settings

Signs in Teenagers

  • Procrastination and difficulty managing multi step assignments

  • Frustration or shutting down around schoolwork, despite genuine effort

  • Sensitivity to feeling different from peers, or repeated correction from adults

  • Risk taking or impulsive decisions as independence increases

Every child's pattern is different, and these signs alone don't confirm ADHD. If several of these feel familiar, it's worth having a conversation with one of our psychologists.
