Anger Management – Our Approach

Therapy That Helps Children and Teens Respond to Anger More Calmly

What is Anger Management Therapy?

Anger is a normal emotion, but for some children and teens it can feel overwhelming and hard to control. When outbursts, meltdowns or ongoing frustration start affecting home life, friendships or school, the right support can make a real difference.

As a team of psychologists working with children and teens across the Lower North Shore in Sydney, we help young people understand what is behind their anger and build calmer, more workable ways to respond.

Supporting Your Child With Therapy

There is no single approach that works for every child, so our psychologists draw on a mix of clinical strategies grounded in psychological research and shape them around your child's age, personality and the situations that tend to trigger them.

We spend time helping your child notice what happens in their body and mind in the lead up to an outburst.

Drawing on therapy techniques, sessions focus on spotting early warning signs and understanding your child’s thoughts.

Building New Ways to Respond

Once a child can recognise what is happening, we help them practise calmer ways to respond. This might include pausing before reacting, using a simple calming strategy or finding new ways to express frustration, so anger feels less overwhelming over time.

We meet regularly with parents to talk through what is working, troubleshoot difficult moments and agree on consistent ways to respond at home, so your child gets the same message in every setting.

Most families begin with a mix of individual sessions for your child and regular check ins with parents, so the strategies used in the room carry through to daily life at home.

As therapy progresses, we take stock of what is working and adjust the approach, so that our support keeps evolving alongside your child.

How Anger Shows Up at Home

When a child or teen struggles with anger, it rarely stays contained to one moment. Family routines can start to revolve around avoiding triggers, siblings may feel caught in the middle, and parents often feel unsure whether to hold firm or ease off. Over time, everyone in the house can feel worn down.

At Aspiring Minds Child Psychology in Neutral Bay, we work with children aged six and older, alongside their parents, carers and schools, to understand what is driving the anger and to build practical strategies for everyday life.

Our approach is individualised and grounded in psychological research, with the goal of helping each child feel supported rather than simply corrected.

Signs of Anger Difficulties in Children and Teens

Anger can show up differently depending on a child's age, temperament and what else may be going on for them. A single outburst is not a cause for concern. It is the pattern over time, and how much it is affecting daily life, that matters.

Signs in Children (6+)

  • Frequent tantrums that feel out of proportion to the situation

  • Difficulty calming down once upset, even with support

  • Physical reactions such as hitting, throwing or kicking

  • Trouble accepting “no” or coping with changes to plans

  • Anger that spills into friendships or family relationships

Signs in Teenagers

  • Irritability or snapping that seems constant rather than occasional

  • Slamming doors, shouting or withdrawing completely during conflict

  • Ongoing tension with parents, siblings or teachers

  • Anger that follows feelings of stress, pressure or being misunderstood

  • Regret or embarrassment after outbursts, without knowing how to stop them

Sad children

Every young person's experience of anger is different, and these signs on their own do not point to a particular diagnosis. If anger is a regular source of stress at home or school, it is worth speaking with one of our psychologists.

What Sits Behind Anger in Children and Teens

Anger is often the most visible part of something bigger going on underneath challenging behaviour. Understanding that underlying cause is a key part of the work we do together.

Some children have big feelings and few ways to express them. In sessions, we help children find words and outlets for these feelings before they build into anger.

Anxiety or Worry in Disguise

For many children, what looks like anger is actually fear or worry that has nowhere else to go. Therapy works on naming and easing the worry underneath, rather than only addressing the anger on the surface.

Children who find change hard, whether that is switching activities, coping with new routines or facing unexpected news, can react with frustration rather than words. We help children build ways of coping with change, with the aim of making transitions feel more manageable over time.

When schoolwork, noise or busy environments feel hard to manage, frustration can build quickly and spill over as anger. Where relevant, we work alongside your child's school to ease the pressure points that tend to lead to frustration.

Separation, a new sibling or tension at home can all show up in a child's behaviour long before they can talk about how they feel. Sessions give children a steady space to process these changes, while parents receive guidance on supporting them through it.

Every child is different, and there is often more than one factor at play. We help you and your child make sense of it, so support can be tailored.
